Selçuk - Temple of Artemis
Selçuk - Temple of Artemis

Thursday 27 January 2022

After we visited the Basilica Of Saint John, I popped into a Tourist Information office to see if it would be possible to walk to Ephesus from Selçuk. After much discussion with the staff about why we would want to do such a bizarre thing as walk, the nice man in the information office took out a tourist map and drew the best route to walk there on the map.
He explained that a cycle/jogging path went past the Museum, Police Station and the Temple of Artemis that would take us right past the turning for Ephesus. It was then that the nice man said something which I found genuinely astonishing. I asked him how much was it to see the Temple of Artemis, and he replied, “Nothing. But it is not worth the effort of visiting. Only one column remains.”
The Temple of Artemis was one of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. A list of must-see places for Hellenistic travellers compiled by Antipater of Sidon, who lived around 100 BC.
In what universe is it not worth seeing, for free, while passing right by it?
