Much Hadham is a small quintessentially English village in the
Hertfordshire countryside that is slightly west of Stanstead Airport and
perhaps, more importantly, the starting point of the first Team South
East walk of 2020.
The drive there gave us little indication of what the weather might
be like for the walk. One minute the sky looked like it was brightening
up and the next it would dump several buckets of rain on the
windscreen.
We had arrived at the High Street in Much Hadham, which was the
designated starting point, and had just started to put our boots on when
we were treated to another quick shower which prompted us to opt for the
full waterproofs.
Luckily, the rain held off for the rest of the day, but the
waterproof trousers stayed on to act as a mud barrier.
Siobán, who had arranged and led the walk, had planned a route that
would take us right through the gardens of the late Henry Moore, the
famous artist best known for his large bronze sculptures. I think Siobán
had kept this a secret as everyone seemed genuinely surprised to see a
giant bronze statue sitting on a large mound of earth as they walked
through a field.
Another pleasant surprise was to spot my first Muntjac Deer, and we
saw three of them during the walk along with a couple of Red Kites.
The debrief took place in the rather pleasant The Bull public house
and was accompanied by a beer called Stargazer from the local Hadham
brewery located half a mile up the road.
