Tsambika Mountain Walk
Tsambika Mountain Walk

Wednesday, 17 April 2019

From the walkway to our hotel room, we had a great view of the hill behind. It is called Tsambika Mountain and sitting on the top of it is a small monastery called Kyra Tsambika. It was a little over 3.5 miles there and back and there are some spectacular views from the top. Well worth the effort of climbing this baby mountain. The Route Distance 3.5 Miles We walked from our hotel to Casa Cook Hotel and then followed the road between the two sections of Casa Cook to its end. From there you can see the path leading to the gate in the photo. You can lengthen the…

After another leisurely breakfast, we check out of the hotel and headed into the centre of Rhodes Town. We only had two things to do today. Get some cash from an ATM and get a bus to Kolymbia. Getting cash was easy enough with plenty of ATMs in the town so we just needed to get tickets for the bus. We returned to the bus station and spoke to the man in the ticket kiosk and discovered that there are in fact two bus stations in the town and that we were at the wrong one. Fortunately, the correct one was just fifty metres away on the same road.

We had a good nights sleep at our accommodation, Galanopetra, and ate our breakfast in the courtyard, sitting in the morning sun. Our plan for the day was to walk to the Acropolis of Rhodes and a few other sites near the Acropolis and then walk down through the modern city of Rhodes to the other side of the peninsula before heading back into the medieval walled city. There was no rush, we had all day and we would not be using any other form of transport other than our feet. So, time for another cup of coffee and an omelette then! We left the hotel just after nine and…

We caught an early morning flight from Gatwick and arrived on the Island of Rhodes at around midday. We only had carry-on luggage, our rucksacks, so we were quick to leave the aircraft and get through passport control but we still managed to miss the bus to Rhodes Town by ten minutes and would have to wait for another fifty minutes for the next one.

We left Kardamilli on Easter Saturday after a lovely stay at the Paradeisos Guest House with our red Easter Eggs and our Easter biscuits so kindly given to us by the lovely owners. We walked along the coast path into town where we joined the footpath up to Exochori. The first thing we realised was that the local transport may not be very reliable and that walking may well be the best option despite the local drivers. We headed off up the path, at first it was quite overgrown and felt like no-one had walked up here for a long time. The route markers were pretty easy to…

Arriving in Athens
Arriving in Athens

Monday, 02 April 2018

Our flight arrived at Athens International Airport on time and before long we were standing in front of the arrivals entrance looking for the bus to the city. It was just after 9 pm when we boarded the bus and the route would take around 50 minutes to get to the centre of the city and from there we would have to walk to find our hotel. The accommodation we had booked originally, Othonos Apartment, was right next to the final bus stop but they cancelled our booking at the last moment even though they had charged Susan’s card several months earlier. Susan had to pursue a complaint through booking.com…
